Google Search Tip #2 -Site Search

Monday, April 9th, 2007

Todays search tip is all about using the well known and popular search engine Google to search any site for data. Why may you want to do this?

Well sometimes you may find your self visiting a site that has no search button, or their search system really isn’t turning up the results you are looking for. Other times its a lot faster to use Google directly to search for your result, instead of going to the site, entering your search, finding the link from the search results and clicking on the result. This is when using Google special search command can help you find what your looking for.

I recently used this to find information about Prague recommended hotels. When you enter “Best Prague hotels” into Google a lot of results show up. I don’t see a lot of results that stand out immediately and outside of having to visit each link and read each review I could use my new search skills to search a well known travel/review site (Frommers) instead.

Create your own Google Map

Thursday, April 5th, 2007

Google Maps is a great tool for anyone looking for locations, driving directions and more. Today Gogole has released the ability for you to create your own map, where you can annotate, outline, add photos or videos to your map. Once you have your map created you can share it with your friends.

I tested this out today and created a map of one of my favorite places for a good IPA beer (Marin Brewing Company). You can check out the screen cap I took here or select this link which will then show you my map in your browser.

To create your own map you need a Google Account which is free, check out the how to here.

Funny Sports Photos

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

Just a quick little post today about some funny sports photos that I found on this link. Some of them I have to think where photoshopped but who knows with the huge amount of sport events year after year some things are bound to get caught on camera. My favorite which doesn’t look real is this one. funny_sport_photo_08.jpg

Evil April Fools Joke

Evil April Fools Joke

While heading to the local pub with my friends we came across this April Fools joke where someone put a lot of stuff behind some screen of paper to hold it from falling out. I guess when the person wakes up in the morning all the stuff falls into their apartment.

This is pretty cleaver,It would of rocked if they did everyone like that in the apt complex. Other than seeing that my April Fools was a bit uneventfully, I just did a 7 mile hike with some friends, had a great lunch with 2 Guinness and chilled the rest of the day.

Not much of an update today, feeling a bit tired still from the hike, which ill post the gps photos and hike trail soon.

Mission Control We have a Problem

Mission Control We have a Problem

You know I have this great friend who will remain anonymous, but hes into collecting remote controls and while I was over at his house the other day I had to take a snap shot of this gathering of remotes.

I count 8 in this photo but I know he has another 3 hiding somewhere :) Now the thing is that all of these are in use in some form or fashion but I think we need to take up a collection to get him the Logitech® Harmony® 1000 uber remote control all in one, it even gets you beer.

Ok last part is a joke but would be great, maybe we can rig it up to the beer launching fridge (see video)

GPS + Google + Camera = Hiking fun

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

This weekend I went on a great hike with some friend of mine and decided to put all my gps gadget stuff to use. With my gps, camera, camel pack and hiking shoes I was off to a great hike in Marin, California. Its a small 3 mile hike with various terrain and not to much difficulty. I snapped a few photos, most of them are just of the hills in Deer Park but the cool thing about all this is I now have gps data of the exact locations where I took my photos and as you can see below I placed them in google maps. Clicking on a red push pin pulls up a thumb of the photo and clicking on that image brings up the full images in another window.

I also put together a full sized map of the hike with the photos here.

I plan on doing this on most hikes and hopefully next time ill write a bit more descriptions about the photos and locations.
